"Everyone has seen students sit and paint a giant wooden panel by the Student Union. The questions are "what is it?", "when will it be done?" and "where exactly will it go?" The mural's theme was Media Influence on Youth. The mural brought several students from the L.I.P., ALAS, GSA, Student Council, Asian Club, and the Student Union together to come up with a creative mural on what they thought affected them and their peers. "The outcome of the mural was creative" stated Raamon Static, a graffiti artist that helped them with the painting. The mural ideas came from everyone who participated and everything stands out. The students came up with education, war, money, economy, politics, health, diversity and culture. The painting is made up of a silhouette of a boy's head. Inside his head is everything that would be in a youth's head. The mural clearly speaks for itself with all the different masterpieces inside the boy's head. Each picture represented something that had been the students' heads that they wanted in the painting. The first idea many students chose was school so there is a picture of Jones in the center of the mural. Near the top of the mural, there is a graduation cap next to a diploma. The school is next to a city skyline, which is also next to the twin towers, where one of the towers is a picture of a gun with a helmet on top of it that made the students think of war and while they were thinking of war, politics came up and they drew the democratic donkey and the republic elephant. The picture of the woman in a suit represents a superficial woman but also represents economy because she is dressed ready to work. Money had also come up which lead to the picture of the eye that is on the dollar bill. The students also brought up how what you wear represents yourself so image was an idea and students decided to make parodies of name brands. Culture and diversity was also what many students wanted on the mural, so they drew cultural flags and from that they thought of unity, so below the flags there is an image of a ha ndshake. The mural committee is hoping to debut their work before June and will be displayed in the courtyard in the Student Union." By Melissa Chen Eagle Back to Student Activities |
