Latin Club
Faculty Supervisor: Maureen TonerMeeting: See Ms. Toner, they are scheduled around special events Mission: Learning Latin gives students the edge as they take college entrance exams. Studies by the College Board show that students who studied Latin in high school scored significantly higher in the Verbal AND Math sections of the SAT than students who took any other language in high school. Some may have developed an interest in mythology and want to learn more about classical civilization. Some have realized that studying Latin throughout high school and reading Latin literature will give them an edge as they study English language and literature, history and philosophy. Others are hooked on Latin because they see that at Jones, being a part of the Latin Club and the Latin Team can be an exciting experience Description: Competes with city and suburban schools in an academic league -- Illinois Certamen League. Competition has a Jeopardy format and all questions are based on the Latin language, mythology and classical civilization. Events: Ides of March, Latin Literary Magazine, Latin Oratory Invitational, fund raisers 2006 LATIN HONORS CONVOCATION: At the Latin Honors Convocation held at Jones College Prep, thirty students were formally inducted into the National Latin Honor Society in a candle-light ceremony. Dr. Donald Fraynd, principal of Jones College Prep, presented Honor Society credentials to these students and special awards to students earning distinction in the National Latin Examination and other individual and team competitions. After guests were welcomed by master of ceremonies, Kelley Leung, the Jones Latin players entertained students, teachers, and guests with scenes from Amphitryon, a Roman comedy written over 2000 years ago. A reception followed this. The National Latin Honor Society confers membership on students on all levels of Latin who maintain an A average in Latin. 2004 candidates for the Jones chapter of NLHS were: Daniel Aguilar, Drew Appekl, Cristina Beltran, Carl Bevignani, Emily Blumenthal, Julie Chen, Alice Cho, Isaias Espinosa, Giselle Galan, Shadae Gatlin, Antonio Guerrero, Belen Hernandez, Daniel Ibarra, Courtney King, Rashakeya Larkinh, Julie Leon, Kelley Leung, Michele Michalak, Betsy Montgomery, Jasmine Morris Tammy Pheuphong, Sarah Rogers, Anel Romano, Allison Smock, Fletcher Speiser, Maud Squiers, Maria Tinoco, Alis Wu, Dan Zeckhauser and Kristinana Zerom. At the Honors Convocation, Maud Squiers, Alice Cho, Kelley Leung, and Giselle Galan received gold medals and a certificate from the American Classical League for their Summa Cum Laude performance on the National Latin Examination which was taken by over 100,000 students this year. Maxima Cum Laude honors and a silver medal went to two other Jones Latin students: Jasmine Morris and Shadae Gatlin. Drew Appel, Belen Hernandez, Anel Romano and Maria Tinocco earned Magna Cum Laude honors and Anna Klimek, Cristina Beltran, Carl Bevignani and Alis Wu received Cum Laude certificates. Kelley Leung also earned a bronze medal cast in Italy for her superior performance in the national Medua Mythology Contest. Shadae Gatlin was recognized as a state finalist in the Illinois Latin Tournament. Drew Appel earned medals as top JCP scorer at the CPS Latin Olympics and was Novice Level MVP for the South Region of the Illinois Certamen League. The Jones Advanced Level Certamen Team- Giselle Galan, Kelley Leung, Isaias Espinosa and William Mosley were South Region champions in ICL. In the Jones Latin Players production of Amphitryon, Dan Aguilar played Amphitryon, Cristina Beltran, his wife, Alcmene, and Kassie Sivils, his faithful slave, Sosia. As is typical in Roman drama, all three of them were totally confused when the gods became involved. Collier Scalzetti-Sanders as Jupiter and Sandra Figueroa, Mercury, came to earth disguised as Amphitryon and Sosia, but in just as typical a fashion, everything was explained by Alcmene's attendant, Bromia, played by Allison Smock. Alis Wu as Thessala completed the cast and Caitlin Szkarlat was the Narrator. For the Induction ceremony, Anna Klimek was the Spirit of the Classics, and Robert Martin, Jarren Lewis, William Mosley and Lee Vethanayagamoni, the Spirits of Latin I, II, III and IV.
