 "My 5 year old Cousin wants to be a stripper" Have you ever seen an ad that's supposed to be selling clothes but you get the idea that you're looking at a porno magazine? Well it is those moments that this particular piece is attempting to comment on. In the past decade the word "Sex" has become synonymous to marketing products. Everything from Gucci to Pepsi has used images of sex to get consumer dollars. The biggest problem with sexual ads is when and where they appear. A mass majority of products are advertised by commercials; giving anyone access to the lude and inappropriate behavior and/or images used to sell items. For Christmas my aunt bought my 5 year old cousin a tiara and a pair of Barbie slippers that had a slight heel on them. When she put the slippers on she said to her grandmother "I want to be a stripper." I was in total shock when I realized that these were the words a five year old. After thinking the situation though, I realized that being a stripper wasn't an aspiration that my little cousin had all along; she had only associated the idea of wearing a pair of high heels with actually being a stripper. So where could she have seen these images; I'm pretty sure that she hasn't been to any strip clubs lately. Something has to be done about the messages being sent to kids through commercials, media, television and magazines; or else we'll end up with a generation of "consumer whore, nymphomaniacs" who'll be sliding down poles before their 10th birthday.
