  • Jones Teacher Nominated for DRIVE Award

    English teacher, Sandra Reed, was nominated by her peers for the Delivering Results Through Innovative and Visionary Education (DRIVE) award and was honored at a dinner at the Hilton Towers on the evening of Sept. 21, 2006.

  • JCP Teacher achieves National Board Certification

    Congratulations to Amy Fritsch on achieving National Board Certification. She has completed what education experts consider to be the most rigorous of professional development programs. She has joined an elite group of teachers, dedicated to developing their professional skills to better serve their students.

  • JCP is pleased to announce that Spanish teacher Diego Giraldo has won a coveted Golden Apple Award. The award was presented by Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan at 9:20 AM on March 10th in front of Giraldo's 2nd period Spanish class. Each of the Golden Apple Award winners will receive a tuition-free fall-term sabbatical at Northwestern University; $2,500; a personal computer from Apple; and induction into the Golden Apple Academy, which now numbers 180 expert teachers who work together to ensure that all children have the excellent teachers they deserve.

  • On March 11th, the Golden Apple Foundation announced that our very own Diego Giraldo had won a coveted Golden Apple award. On May 8th, Diego attended the official Golden Apple awards ceremony at the Fairmont Hotel where he and the other winners were honored for their outstanding skills and dedication. The ceremony will be aired as a one-hour prime-time special on WTTW/Channel 11 on May 31st at 5pm.

  • Jones College Prep is the recipient of an Attendance Award from the Board of Education for maintaining over 90% attendance from 1999-2003. The administration would like to brainstorm with students on the best way to spend some of the money from the award to encourage even greater attendance. Congratulations to our students!

  • Jones College Prep is the recipient of the Board of Education's Rising Star School Award. This award is given to schools who show drop-out progress, on-track to graduation progress, and PSAE school growth. Jones is one of 58 Rising Star schools in the Chicago Public Schools. Once again, our students shine!

  • Jones College Prep was honored with a Spotlight Schools Special Recognition Award on November 6, 2003, at NIU Naperville. JCP is the ONLY high school in Illinois to receive this award. More info can be found in the ISBE Board Memo at www.p20.niu.edu, Spotlight Schools page, under "News."

  • Iris Schrey received the President's Service Recognition Award from the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling. Ms. Schrey is a member with more than five years of service and has provided strong and consistent leadership to the IACAC.

  • Siemens Award for Advanced Placement

  • Jones College Prep earned the honor of School of Distinction in 2002. Distinction is the highest accountability rating the Chicago Public Schools awards.

  • Oppenheimer Family Foundation Teacher Incentive Grant 2004 was received by Ms. Robin Bennett. She received $1800 for additional lights and mics for on-camera use. Students will learn the art of story-telling across mass media. The JCP Movie Makers Club will combine acting, directing, writing, filming and editing with specific academic subject areas to tell content-rich stories.

  • Mr. Diego Giraldo and Mr. Marco Camacho won the Oppenheimer Grant entitled: "The ALAS Festival and Documentary Multimedia Project." The purpose of the Oppenheimer Grant is to allow students to integrate and present their cultural diversity and heritage to the school and local community. Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) will be using forms of art such as dance and theater. They will showcase a multimedia documentary project the day of the ALAS Festival. They will be advocating the use of technology, and incorporating teamwork and leadership among ALAS students.

  • The Science Week Committee of The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy has awarded Mr. Ray Lesniewski for his credentials and his exceptional philosophy of education. A formal Award presentation is arranged for the evening of Monday, March 8th, 2004 in Chicago Hyatt hotel in Truffles room at 6:00 pm, during the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy.   • Mrs. Karen Stolzenberg is working on her Oppenheimer Grant - Garden Sculptures with a group of students. The large cement and mosaic sculptures will be placed in the front garden in the spring for all the Jones community to enjoy.

  • CONGRATULATIONS to JCP student Daniel Blumenthal: Winnings of over $10,000

    Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
    Congratulations to senior Daniel Blumenthal who won over $10,000 in prize money for his work in microbiology at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held this year in Indianapolis. Intel ISEF is the World's largest pre-collegiate science fair, bringing together almost 1500 students from 47 different countries to compete in many areas of science and engineering.

    Daniel placed 2nd in his category and also won awards from the American Phytopathological Society and the U.S. Navy. Daniel was also a finalist at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held in Albequerque, New Mexico, where he received a college scholarship award.

    Daniel has been working for the past three years at a microbiology lab at The University of Chicago. His research focuses on understanding the interaction between different proteins that bacteria use to infect plants, and how these proteins ultimately cause disease in plants.



  • Each September, the College Board recognizes the many high school students who have distinguished themselves academically by announcing AP award recipients. The students receive a certifical and their achievement is acknowledged on any subsequent AP Reports to colleges. Award recipients not only gain recognition from colleges but the admiration of their peers, families and communities. AP Scholar- granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. AP Scholar with Honor - granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. AP Scholar with Distinction - Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher on five or more AP exams.

  • Andre Owens is pictured giving an audition at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington IL in October of 2004, where he won 4th place among high school singers in three states.

  • Student of the Month

    Noel Perez - TELEMUNDO Chicago student of the month.

    Noel Perez, senior in division 501, was selected as the TELEMUNDO Chicago student of the month. Noel was featured on the 5:30 and 10 pm broadcast on December 29, 2004 on channel 44 Telemundo. Congratulations Noel!

  • Congratulations to Peter Clark. Peter has been awarded with a 4 year scholarship to IIT! Laura Noe has won a scholarship to Loyola University Chicago for four years! Latrice Ferguson has been awarded a scholarship to DePaul University in Indiana. Congrats to all!

  • William James and Michael Porter were able to hang out with opera star, Sherill Milnes at Monastero's Restaurant where the boys won the Junior Prelims at the Bel Canto Contest. Each won a $100 prize and a chance to compete for scholarship in a summer program. James goes on to finals in May 2004 to win $250 more.



  • JCP Vocal students won 14 Superior Ratings and 13 Honors Superior Ratings at the CPS Solo Ensemble Competition on March 20 at Whitney Young HS. The Men's Ensemble, Michael Porter and William James, performed in the Honors Recital before contestants from other public schools. Monica Pitts, Kywanzia Martin, Jonathan Tolliver, Courtney Richardson and Kendra Fortenberry all were all awarded Superior Medals.



  • ICTM State Mathematics Contest

  • Isaias Espinoza -Gates Millenium Scholar
    The seventh class of Gates Millenium Scholars was recently announced. With these scholarships, 1000 highly motivated students from 46 states and the District of Columbia will be able to attend college with the burden of tuition. GMS Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students of color across the country who demonstrate academic excellence and strong leadership skills. GMS Scholars who choose to pursue graduate studies are eligible to receive continued funding. Isaias Espinoza recently received this honor. Isaias has also been recognized as National Merit Commended and National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.

  • ILLINOIS LATIN TOURNAMENT STATE FINALIST - Shadae Gatlin
    Shadae Gatlin, a freshman at Jones College Prep, has been named a finalist in the Illinois Latin Tournament. Shadae received a ranking of SUPERIOR in District Level competition and advances to the State finals at Monmouth College on April 29th, where she will compete again in a grueling three hour exam with other top-ranked Latin students from public and private schools throughout the state of Illinois.

  • Congratulations to Karen Villagomez and Matthew Pahuski, Spanish National Exam Winners
    Results of the SNE for the Chicago area chapter are in. We are very happy that two JCP students scored among the highest in the city/suburb area. They will be awarded at a special awards ceremony at Dominican University on May 20th.

  • Congratulations to Kenneth Alvarado and Juan Kimble - First Place Winners of Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence
    The first place winners of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence contest are Kenneth Alvarado and Juan Kimble. They will receive laptops as a prize! Congratulations to Christopher Cantero who won the Honorable Mention award and he will receive a $25 gift certificate. The award ceremony will be on Thursday, May 25, 11:00 a.m., at Lane Technical High School.
