How to use these resources:

Each resource below provides high-school students with meaningful information about writing in all subject areas. The descriptions will help students choose the resource to help them with a specific issue. Students can also browse these sites in between writing assignments to help them develop their writing confidence and competence.

  • Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed to assist students respect other people's intellectual properties. Use this site to cite sources correctly in MLA or APA styles.
  • The CCC Foundation Web site includes interactive exercises and quizzes about different aspects of writing. Use this to improve your writing at the essay, paragraph, grammar, or usage level. See the “Grammar, Quizzes, and Search Devices” section for interactive lessons.
  • The Write Way provides support for academic writing (writing used to provide information in a school-related setting). See the links at the bottom of the page for help with style, punctuation, and essay writing.
  • Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab site has information and resources specifically for 7-12 grade students. Interesting sections include “General Academic Writing,” “Internet Literacy,” “Literacy Analysis and Criticism,” and “Writing in the Social Sciences.”
  • This online version of The Elements of Style provides easy-to-follow guidelines to avoid common writing errors.
