Request To Have a Cellular Phone / Pager During School
Cellular phones and electronic devices can easily become a distraction to learning and appropriate social norms. They have no place within the regular learning environment of the school. However, because of the unique circumstances (i.e. long trip to school) of many of our students and per CPS policy, "Upon detailed written explanation from parent or guardian, principals may authorize a student to possess a cellular telephone for medical or other family emergencies or for any other good cause.” No electronic devices may be brought into the school building until the following procedures have been followed.
1. Student must obtain the “Request To Have A Cellular Phone/Pager During School” form.
2. The form must be completed, signed by student, parent/guardian, and returned during the registration process.
3. Once completed and submitted, the Assistant Dean of Student Development will keep this form on file.
4. Upon completing this process, the student is then allowed to enter the school building with the approved device but it should not be visible during the school day. Students are allowed to use their cell phones in the CELL PHONE ZONE* only during the student’s scheduled lunch period.
5. Students are allowed to use their cell phones throughout the school in the morning but they must be turned off and put away by the 7:56 am warning bell. Students are also allowed to use their cell phones throughout the school after school but not until after the 2:54 pm dismissal bell.
6. This privilege is only for students to have access to these devices while traveling to and from school. Students needing to use the phone FOR AN EMERGENCY during the school day should be referred to the counselors, the attendance office, the Dean or Assistant Dean’s office. STUDENTS WHO ABUSE OR MISUSE THE CELLULAR PHONE/PAGER PRIVILEGES WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM.
*The cell phone zone is the lunchroom during scheduled lunch periods. It must be the students lunch period and they must wear their ID proving that it is their lunch period.
** If the student body abuses the PRIVILEGE of the Cell Phone Zone, morning or afternoon flexibilities the options may be revoked.
If a staff member or adult hears any noise (including a vibration) coming from a concealed location the student will be required to reveal the source of the noise and the following disciplinary actions will be taken:
Consequences for visible cell phone / pager:
o 1st Offense - confiscation of the item and a detention, the item is to be returned at the convenience of the Assistant Dean’s office.
o 2nd Offense - confiscation of item, detention and parent/guardian must report to JCP to retrieve/pickup the electronic device at the convenience of the Assistant Dean’s office.
o 3rd Offense and continued offenses - confiscation of item, detention, and parent/guardian must report to JCP to retrieve/pickup the electronic device, and the student will no longer be permitted to have the device on school grounds.
Consequences for activation or use of cell phone / pager:
o Confiscation of the item to be returned at the convenience of the Assistant Dean’s office. Due to the increased opportunity for cell phone usage, if a student is found using a cell phone / pager outside of the Cell Phone Zone, the consequences will be more severe up to and including suspension.
