Serious Acts of Misbehavior / When Standard Consequences Don't Work
For serious acts of misbehavior (as defined ultimately by the Assistant Dean or designee) or after standard consequences do not work to deter problem behavior, a discipline referral may be made to the Assistant Dean or designee by any staff member. The seriousness of a referral to the Assistant Dean or designee speaks for itself. The case will be dealt with rapidly, firmly, and fairly. This is a general outline of the procedures will be used:
1. The staff member will make a referral to the Assistant Dean or designee for the student on a Discipline Referral Form.
2. Serious acts will result in the student being immediately brought to the Assistant Dean or designee.
3. The Assistant Dean or designee will have a conference with the student. At this time, the consequences will be determined according to the guidelines/philosophies of the school's discipline program and the framework of the SCC. Repeat offenders will be dealt with more severely. Disciplinary actions may include the following:
a. Parent conference request.
b. Assignment of before/after school or Saturday detentions.
c. In-School suspension for 1 - 5 days.
d. Out-of-School suspension for 1 - 10 days.
e. Police officer notification of activities which are serious breaches of state or municipal laws.
f. Any of the consequences listed in the Consequences Used to Help Students Learn Responsibility section of this document.
Note: During any out-of-school suspension the student may not attend class, participate in school activities, or visit the school grounds. Students found on the premises may be arrested for trespassing. Any Out-of-School suspension is counted as a day's absence. In-school suspension is counted as a day of attendance. All students must return from In-School or Out-of-School suspension with all work completed.
