The newly restructured JCP Advisor of Choice program provides a relevant, personalized, student-centered experience for engaging in discussions which foster a sense of self, community in the school, counseling, and academic, social and emotional issues. This is achieved through structured activities built to promote the growth of students in three capacities: 1) personal/social/communal, 2) career/vocational, and 3) academic/learning. Our school recommends that our teachers lead regularly scheduled Advisor of Choice periods, and that they follow their specific core group of students for two or more years. The Advisor of Choice is an adult who has frequent contact and works very closely with the student over time. The Advisors possess a deep understanding of the student’s personal, academic and professional goals, as well as documents pertinent to the student’s education and growth, such as progress and grade reports, and discipline referrals. For issues involving questions about their student, parents should email or call the student’s Advisor of Choice. Student participation in Advisor of Choice is a graduation requirement. This rich program has built in self-evaluative measures and constantly seeks to improve and enhance its curriculum based upon student need. Common and frequent meetings enable advisors, counselors and administrators to assess the success of the program and make appropriate modifications, prepare/ receive training, and discuss student needs. Advisor of Choice meetings will vary by week and will be posted on the school calendar.
